Go in your backyard and plan the layout of your cage. Determine where you want it, how big you can make it and whether you want it to be lighted. You then can also decide on what material to put on the ground and what type of netting. You should spend money on good quality netting material. Good netting will not rot in the elements and last a long time.

Your most important decision may be what netting to get. Netting comes in different sizes; make sure to find out what size is best for a batting cage. Nylon is the strongest netting and is very durable. However, it may not always be appropriate for outdoor use. Nylon easily absorbs moisture and get rot quickly. It is possible to get it coated which will reduce its ability to absorb, which helps but does not prevent all absorption. Nylon is also more expensive than other materials.

Polyethylene netting is usually less expensive than nylon and it does not absorb moisture. It does however, break down in sunlight. For use outside, it can be treated with some sort of sunblock. When treated, it should be good for outdoor cages.

For the baseball player in your family, batting cages are essential. Having one in your backyard is a great convenience and can lead to more practice time and improved skill. If there is room for a cage, you should look into putting one in your yard. Buy one online or find someone to build it for you. If you build it, they will hit!
