The necessary, and perhaps also the most important, skill in playing baseball is throwing. This can control the success or failure of it. To be able to be successful in performing a throw, it is imperative that it will be done with appropriate speed and accuracy. Thus, throwing with accuracy and speed will determine the effectiveness of player and might even manage the game.
Though it is incomprehensible that all players, even high school students, are expected to do a perfect throw, it is still bearable since all baseball fields have the same size and length. This just simply means that because of its dimension, it is expected that minor high school games and major baseball league are to perform the same skills while playing baseball.
The Throw
These dimensions though may be hard to cover for those kid players who have not grown into adolescence as yet. But despite being so, they can train the other parts of their body needed for the game. They can develop strong and accurate throwing arms. In this game, practice makes perfect.
For students under the high school age, it is necessary to practice within 6 to 9 months. As high school age approaches, the training can be as rigid as some couple of days in a week. But still, having a rest in between training is recommended.
When it is about throwing with speed and accuracy, there are three kinds of this that should be practiced properly. Moreover, each throw has a certain prescribed action and posture to follow. By following this properly, a successful throw will surely be done.
1. The beginning stance- the ball must go where the pitcher is aiming at, a loose ball can cost the team the game, especially in the late innings. It’s about hand and eye coordination, and also learning the proper stance, and that is at a ninety degree angle from the hitter, with the front shoulder pointed in that direction. The turn of the body with the throw will be giving the ball the speed that it needs.
2. Direction 2 – A direct step to the target is essential because without this, the players will not be able to get a good angle for their hips which will result to a less accurate and powerless throw. As long as the players will focus on the direction of the target, they will be able to do the right step. Trace a line from the lead foot to the target which will be followed by the players.
3. Follow through – The arm should have a complete turn so the shoulder will not be totally stressed from the action. This will also stop the players from aiming the ball. Most players who do a complete path for the arm are those who finish their throws at the opposite side hip, knee or thigh accompanied with a raised rear leg as they throw. This method will facilitate weight transfer which will result to putting all the power into the throw.
Putting it down in words makes it seem easy but having academic knowledge and putting it to use are two very different things. It’s like reading a manual on how to build a bike on your own, and actually getting down to building it. At a certain point, it will be time to put the book down and begin working because some of the terms that are used will not make sense until you do.
