There are several skills a pitcher must acquire in order to be a reliable starter on his team. On the other hand, a pitcher develops much of his skill set off the field. Everyday we develop certain attitudes towards everything in life. These attitudes stay with us for years and years to come. Are you a leader? Do you set and accomplish goals? Many athletes are remembered for who they are off the field, not for the records they set on it. Think about recent records set in Baseball; what did steroids do to these individuals integrity for the game of baseball? So, what makes the perfect pitcher on the field?

People often ask me what the perfect formula is for a pitcher on the field. The first answer will always be that they have pursued knowledge about proper throwing mechanics and they continually work on technique. The very best pitchers will stay healthy and will be relied on the most. The pitchers who have learned how to throw the ball correctly are usually the starting pitchers because they have learned to throw using their body as a leveraging tool to propel them forward. They dont need to rely on their arm solely for their speed.

We know that these attributes make quality pitchers on the field. Throwing mechanics, functional fitness, understanding how your body works and an understanding of the mental aspects of the game; these skills make complete pitchers. I cannot stress enough importance on how being a student of the game will also help you succeed on the mound. So what makes the perfect pitcher off the field?

Pitchers are leaders! They know the game is in their hands and it starts and stops when they want it to. They take advantage of learning the core values that true leaders have and mimic what qualities and characteristics they possess. Great pitchers have outstanding attitudes and people want to be around them. Their attitudes are contagious as they strive for everyday greatness. Someone once said that preparation will give you a chance to be successful in a game of failure. The very best athletes set goals everyday of their lives.

If you are a pitcher who wants to succeed in Baseball; you should work on leadership skills and abilities. You should also try and learn as much as you possibly can about people and why they do the things they do. This will help you prepare for the mental game on the field and some crazy and adoring fans off of it. My advice is to live everyday to its fullest and thirst for the knowledge that will always give you the upper hand.
