Dustin Nippert stated his case for retaining the No. five role in the Texas Rangers’ starting pitching rotation in the Rangers’ five-2 victory against the Blue Jays in the 1st half of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Next up, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st start because leaving the rotation in the commencement of June for the disabled list.

Nippert showed far superior control than in his latest appearance last week in New York. In the Bronx, he allowed 11 base runners (four hits, seven BBs) and got eleven outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to get his 5th victory of the season and third as a starter. Nippert gave up five hits, and walked only one. He reduced his earned run average as a starter to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert’s third respectable game in his previous five outings.

Nippert insisted there honestly was not much variation concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: “Truly able to throw good pitches. In New York, I believe I threw one curveball in the strike zone. The bigger mess I put myself in, I tried harder to get away from it. I was merely going the wrong way. I continued walking guys, trying to create that spot on pitch.

“Earlier, I was able to throw it ahead in the count, behind in the count. Keep the opposing team away from my fastball.”

Insisted manager Ron Washington: “I don’t suppose he was pitching too hard. He was equalizing with his change-up and his moving pitches. Elevated his fastball.”

Washington and Nippert mutually acknowledged Nippert was not playing to guard his role in the rotation. And Nippert said he’ll gladly start or come in from the bullpen. Since the Texas Rangers are in wild card contention, each teammate’s role increases in magnitude.

“I simply would like to help out this franchise,” he claimed. “It’s pleasant for us that we possess more arms presently. Whoever’s pitching well you may go with.
