At present, there are a tremendous amount of different pitches involved in softball. First, softball pitching may involve a fastball, which actually goes straight. Balance is an extremely important factor when it comes to softball throwing. If you truly want to have the correct equilibrium, we recommend keeping the feet a little less than shoulder width’s apart. When you begin your wind-up your weight will move from the weaker foot to your strong one. You will notice a rocking motion take place when this occurs.

Your pitching arm will begin to move towards the catcher, but through and eventually reaching a twelve o’clock position. In order to keep accuracy and balance at the same time, the glove arm will actually point towards the catcher’s mitt. When the ball comes back through the wind-up, it will be released around the hip level and provide a wrist snap at the same time. Without any action or snap at the release point, the rotation or spin will be minimal.

Changeups in softball pitching are a little different. Granted, the wind-up and the grip are the same, but your wrist action will vary. The idea is to release the ball before you reach waist level, and flip both the wrist and the forearm. Doing so will create a slowed movement which creates the changeup.

Some softball pitching involves a dropball, which is accomplished by holding it with the fingertips on the stitches of the horseshoe. Taking a much shorter stride than a fastball, you land with the gloved side leg. By staying tall as you release that ball, with your weight forward you release the ball by pulling backwards a bit with your fingertips, thus creating a very fast forward spin.

Then we have the curveball. The position of your fingers will be crucial to the success of this softball throwing pitch. The pinky and index fingers should be spread as far apart as possible. Your middle and ring fingers should be positioned properly on the laces. Most importantly the thumb will need to be set at a six o’ clock setting underneath the ball. If you’re a right hander you will roll the ball counterclockwise and lefties will send it through rolling the ball clockwise.

Getting a handle on each one of these pitches means you need to practice, practice, practice. The more repetition you have, the easier it will be to produce some magnificent softball pitching. If you want to throw faster you must take a stride not a step! In order to establish that explosiveness you want in your delivery, it is imperative that you lead with your hips. This means if you were to lift your leg, your hips lead the way, not your knee. If your knee leads the way you are taking more of a step than a stride. This will slow things down for you.

In order to keep optimal balance toward home plate, it is also imperative to keep your head over your center line until your front foot hits the ground. Balance is what creates control and velocity. Okay, you need to have explosive movements as well. But, you also want to make sure that all of your momentum is going in the right direction and that is straight forward. What you dont want to do is lean back or lean too far forward creating lack of balance.

Keep balance on the balls of your feet to help create momentum to foot strike! It is difficult to maintain good balance and posture when your weight is on the heels of your feet. You cant create much momentum (pitching velocity) when you are falling backwards instead of driving yourself toward your target. Also use your front leg as a leveraging tool to get yourself out there quicker.

Study the pitches that are thrown in different counts. It is amazing how much can be learned through observation, if you are LOOKING to learn!

The next time you are with your child a college game, or watch a Major League game on television, spend some time talking about what is going on in the game from a movements and strategy standpoint. You will notice that when you spend sometime viewing the game from this perspective, you will notice things that were right in front of your face before, but you never quite saw them taking place.

“But, Coach, Look At Gary Sheffield Hit, He Waves His Arms Before He Swings, Why Can’t I hit that way? He’s Pretty Good.” This is a question that I sometimes get from younger players in regards to a Major League Players mechanics.

To me, this question has an easy two part answer. All good hitters and pitchers may start different, but at contact or release all have the same fundamental mechanical aspects. And number two; some Major League Players have tremendous rare and uncommon physical ability. This sometimes allows them to “deviate” away from a few mechanical fundamentals. As a coach or parent, we should also be looking for what has the greatest chance of making a player better.
