Fantasy baseball leagues, as the name suggests, based on the ability to cherry pick different players from different teams and combine them into unique fantasy teams. A fantasy team’s success would depend on the production of the players within the fantasy team. The process of selecting players and tracking performance is a bit tedious. Hence, many websites have been developed to assist in the process.

A fantasy league is comprised of a number of fantasy teams. Each fantasy team is combined of players from different real teams. Many fans find this more exciting than picking a local or favorite team that might not live up to expectations. Furthermore, it gives the fan more control of not only which players to pick, but also who to play from week to week. It’s a way to vicariously live the life of a baseball manager.

The selection process is conducted in a fashion similar to a draft. As there are thirty teams in the draft, typically the maximum number of players in any one league would be thirty. However, usually the number of league members is much smaller. Once the draft is over, then there can be trades or free agent signings.

Given the number of variables, calculating fantasy team performance and league stats can become quite involved. Given that all players are available for fantasy selection, maintaining league wide statistics is mandatory. Also, each player’s value is determined by their performance such as runs batted in, homeruns, and stolen bases. Certain positions tend to have higher values such as center fielder and catcher. Each player’s production is ranked and points are then assigned accordingly. Sometimes certain stats are weighted heavier than others, depending on the league.

The way to draft a fantasy team is to focus on certain important player positions. For example, high RBI players are more valued because of the number of runs scored and home runs. Catchers are also higher up on the ladder given that they manage the pitchers. However, in most cases, there is a steep drop in production after the top four or five players. Hence, drafting strategy also becomes vital in building a good fantasy team. If you are drafting middle or late, then you need to go for value at that point knowing your selection in later rounds. It is always best to go for a solid producer. Other positions that are drafted include tight ends, wide receivers, kickers, special teams, and defense.

In order to ensure proper record keeping and avoid any disagreements, many fantasy leagues outsource the data handling to third party vendors. However, many have taken advantage of the fantasy league websites offered online. The results are typically sent out after all the week’s games have been played. This allows for team owners to strategize accordingly for the following week. In fact, the popularity of fantasy leagues has resulted in new television programming targeting this segment.

The sole purpose of playing in a fantasy league is to regale in the joy not only team control but also team success. There are also bragging rights associated with a winning season. Some leagues are structured to give monetary payouts. These leagues are often times costlier and require fees for free agents and trades.

Fantasy baseball leagues have had the collateral effect of making smaller market or last place teams becoming more widely followed. Also, good players receive wider recognition and this can help build a fan base for players on poor teams. In fact, there are many times that players themselves organize their own fantasy leagues for fun. This has all helped make the sport of baseball more popular than ever.
